Amazon Product Photography

Amazon product photography has been an essential part of my business ever since I started to receive an increasing amount of requests for professional Amazon product photography about five years ago. The Amazon Marketplace is a fantastic platform for new and established businesses to bring their products to market. Especially Amazon US offers sheer gigantic business opportunities, but also Amazon UK and EU markets are easily accessible.

All it takes is the right product at the right time for the right price – and good Amazon product photography! I’m fully aware of the Amazon product photography requirements and I’ve had the pleasure of working for many different businesses successfully selling their products on Amazon using my photography.

What’s the difference between amateur and professional photos? It’s the overall sharpness and clarity, brightness and colour intensity, a truthful colour balance, natural looking shadows and reflections, photoshop-clean and blemish-free surfaces, razor-sharp edges and corners, perfect white background and lastly about a tenfold higher image resolution.

Amazon’s requirements

Amazon requires the background of all shots to be digital pure white (RGB 255,255,255). This means each shot needs to be ‘cut out’ in photoshop (also called ‘clipping’). Slight remains of shadows are allowed and help the viewer to get a better three dimensional impression of the product.

Large-scale to macro photography

Whatever the size of your product, chances are high that I can photograph it. From the smallest pieces of jewellery to heavy-duty industrial machines, please get in touch and I’ll explain my technical approach.

Creative Lighting

Especially if your product has glass or reflective elements I’d like to experiment with light to make its material and shape really stand out.

Professional lights

Photography is all about lighting. Professional product photography (especially Amazon product photography) requires a lot of ‘soft’ light. Soft light means light coming for a source relatively large to the subject in shot. I have so-called ‘softboxes’ ranging from shoebox-size all the way up to 190cm in diameter. This allows me to light products of almost any size or shape.

My place or yours?

All of my equipment can be packed or set up within 45min. By default everything is ready to go in my studio but I am just as happy to visit your office or warehouse to shoot your products where they are. This way I’ve shot almost the entire assortment of the Courtauld Shop and Simply Supplements.

Tethered capturing

My camera shoots directly into photoshop via a high speed connection without any time-consuming memory card file transfers. Just a second after I’ve taken a shot you can see it in high resolution on a big screen (even remotely via Skype or Google Hangout) to provide your feedback or to sign off the shot – a massive timesaver!

Turn-around time

Depending on how busy I am you will have your pictures within three working days of the product arriving here. On average I need about 60-90min for the actual shoot and an additional 2-3 hours for post-production in Photoshop.

I’m more than happy to ship your product back to you and add the shipping costs to my invoice. Otherwise I’ll simply recycle it.

What about props and lifestyle shots?

I’m happy to add lifestyle shots to your Amazon product photography package. Lifestyle shots are all about creative improvisation to keep production time and budget under control. Need a breakfast table for your product? No problem. A bubbly bath? Easy! Whatever you need I’ll do my best to find a cost-effective solution.

Do you need a model for your images?

My wife (first five images below) often models for me which wouldn’t cost you anything extra. The next images feature Victoria – an up-and-coming model who happens to live in my street. She charges £100 for a photoshoot up to 2h (usually we are faster). I’m also happy to work with pets, however this would have to be arranged by yourself.

Non-white background product photography

Fancy something more fancy? I have a variety of coloured and even reflective backgrounds to display and highlight your product even more. Even though Amazon only allows white backgrounds, coloured backgrounds can be a great addition for your own website and web shop, social media and print advertising. I’m happy to offer you a combined package of white background and coloured background shots.

Future-proof quality

I shoot on one of the highest resolution full-frame cameras on the market, the Sony a7R mk3 which captures photos at an incredible 42 megapixel resolution. This means that even after cropping your image to a square format you’ll end up with at least 5000 x 5000 pixels. Amazon recommends 2000 x 2000px and requires 1000 x 1000px. Even as technology advances you’ll be covered for a long time.

Pre-production brief

A good way of briefing me would be that you simply shoot your products with your phone (left image) from the angles you want, pop these in an email to me with a couple of bullet points and I will recreate your ideas on a professional level here (right image).

How do I brief you?

What about retouching?

There are cheap photographers out there who simply place a product in a light box, shoot it and send the files straight from the camera to the client (often for less than £20 per image). What distinguishes me from my competitors is the amount of work and the attention I put into details. Almost all of my pictures are composites of multiple exposures merged together in photoshop to archive uncompromising sharpness and detail. Each photo undergoes a lengthy post-production process to remove surface imperfections and dust particles, enhance details and to clean edges and corners. Even though my pictures will mostly be seen on Amazon I treat each one as if it was created for large billboard advertising. Many of my images have been printed in magazines (watches, food, jewellery, real estate, portraits). Especially when photos get printed professional quality really does make a difference.

Add infographics to your product photography

Infographics are a great way to communicate specific features of your product quickly and clearly. Lots of sellers are now adding infographics to their Amazon product photography to stick out of the crowd. I’m happy to add text bubbles and detail loupes to your final images. Simply speak to me about the details.
