Studio Photography

Studio photography is a lot of fun and if the weather is as cold as it has been for the last weeks it is a lot more comfortable too. Studio photography is all about composing the right shot. Studio photography is about light and how to control it.

I do a lot of wedding photography, which in contrast to studio photography is all about capturing the right moment. I usually don’t have much control of the light during a wedding. Apart from maybe using a flash on my camera I pretty much have to work with the existing light. Lighting my subject in natural light is a question of position. I have to move around my couples and their guests to make them stand in the sweet spot of the natural light.

In studio photography I have complete control. I can set up flashes to my liking and my needs. I use flash modifiers such as umbrellas, soft boxes, reflectors, snoots and flags to guide, spread or even stop my light. Studio photography is endlessly creative.

Recently I had the pleasure to work for young actress and model Kim Perry in my studio. Her agent commissioned me to take a couple of new headshots for her set cards and spotlight profile.

We had about 30 minutes and I had two very different looks in mind. The first one is in front of a pure white background. I set up a large softbox in front of her as my key light plus a hair light from opposite direction – a very common studio photography setup. We shot some very friendly, funny, cheeky and sweet headshots. The look and feel is very pure and innocent.

The second look is quite the opposite. We switched to a dark background and used a lot more aggressive lighting setup. Kim deliberately messed up her hair a bit. The outcome was just as we planned: mature, sexy, dark and a lot more intriguing.

The second half of this studio photography shoot we spend together behind the computer selecting and touching up the best photos, which Kim took home with her on a USB stick.
