Whatever the occasion
Family portrait photography can be taken for a number of reasons. You may be trying to capture a funny memory for your family and loved ones, or perhaps you’d like a more alluring shot that’s ideal for a dating website. Whatever the reason, a portrait photograph comes with a lot of decisions – where to shoot, what backgrounds to choose, how to light the shot and more – but that’s where I come in.
Shooting a personal family portrait
I’ll start your family portrait photography shoot by discussing your requirements, and what message you are trying to get across with your photographs. Next, it is my job to make you feel as comfortable as possible. We can do this by playing around with angles and expressions for the “warm-up” shots – indeed, even the first 20 or so are just to get us started.
The non-‘say cheese’ approach
After warming up a little, you’ll soon start to relax and your true personality will begin to radiate through. Once we’re at that stage, I’ll take the role of director and you the performer – I’ll tell you where to go and how to pose, saving you the worry of what to do next. It’s important at this stage not to overthink things and smile too much. I always tell my clients to look at the camera as if they are greeting someone. That way, we can achieve a natural, personal expression without a “say cheese” in sight!
