Even though I am a Guildford-based photographer I frequently get hired for photography jobs in Epsom. Epsom is within easy reach and I enjoy both private photography jobs such as weddings or portraits and commercial gigs such as product photography or corporate headshots.
I was recently commissioned to shoot Mark’s 21st birthday party in Epsom. Mark and his family know how to celebrate in style and invited over 150 guests to a lovely bar in Epsom.
We started the evening by taking various group portraits. Mark with his parents, Mark with his siblings, Mark with extended family… I spent about half an hour shooting various combinations of people just outside this bar in the centre of Epsom. In order to capture the right skin tones and to avoid harsh shadows I sent up two large softbox flashes with external battery packs to my left and right about one metre above camera level.
Inside the party was already in full swing. The excellent cover band from Epsom played all sorts of groovy disco tunes. A finger food buffet ensured nobody got hungry in between partying.
As a party photographer I simply go around and take fun shots of various groups of about 2-8 people. I also try to shoot wide shots of the whole party as well as sniper style shots of people dancing and enjoying themselves without noticing me. Those photos are often the most fun as they are the most natural and authentic.
I shoot a lot during parties like this one. To ensure my flash doesn’t run out of power I have an amazingly strong external battery pack connected to it. It can easily happen that I’d shoot 300+ photos per hour, which means I’ll have to spend a bit sometime in post-production selecting and fine tuning the best one. For this job in Epsom for example I spent an additional two hours at the computer selecting, finishing and exporting 180 photos which I sent to my client next morning.
