Product photography has to achieve everything a high street shop would do: convey a high level of product quality, a fashionable look and feel and a trustworthiness of the brand.

Customers expect high quality product photography. The images must be razor sharp and high in contrast. The colours must be vivid and the angle of each photo must show the very best of the product. Modern high-resolution displays (retina displays) require a very high level of detail in the photos. Clean cut-out photos advertising add to the sense of clutter-free premium quality.

QA Sports is a London-based start-up. They specialised in high-quality sport clothing and accessories. Their latest product is a versatile sports bag including several handy pockets and even a waterproof compartment for towels and swimsuits. The product is now available on Amazon.

The head of marketing of QA sports approached me to photograph this bag here in my photography studio in Guildford.

For this job I used my specialised product photography table again. This table has a semi-transparent surface allowing me to light the product from both top and bottom. This technique creates a look of the product floating in the air. In total I used four flashes to light this product evenly from all sides. In order to make it look full and big I stuffed it with some towels. The shot with the water being poured into the bag was a lot of fun to create. I used a very short exposure to freeze time, which creates this very detailed look of the water.

Successful Amazon advertising requires photos of at least 1000 pixels wide. My camera has a full frame sensor, which creates 22 mega pixel images, which is over 5000 pixels wide – enough data and image quality for the next generations of displays.
