As you’ll see from my previous blog about Vanessa and Edd, I don’t always just photograph the wedding itself – sometimes a couple will like to relive their celebrations once again, whether they’re partying in a different location or just want to try something different.
This was the case for Holly and James, whose wedding in Soho was something of an “upgrade” to their previous celebrations the year before, which were attended by their parents alone. This time around the pair were looking for a big party in the capital, and they certainly pulled out all the stops to make sure they got just that.
A Wedding in Soho, London
Despite the huge pallet of colours at this stunning venue, Holly and James asked me to present the majority of their photos in black and white. I was happy to do this, as I think black and white is flattering on everybody and gives wedding photos an extra touch of sophistication.
Of course, they also complemented the stunning venue, which was a joy to experiment with. There were mirrors in every room, which I used to my advantage! James couldn’t have looked more excited as he waited for his bride, and the ceremony itself was non-religious but symbolic, with lots of personal touches. There were several readings; plus the couple mixed two different kinds of sand in one glass to represent “two becoming one.”
Cocktail reception photos
Holly and James’ reception was one of the most memorable I’ve had the pleasure to photograph yet. The pair had chosen a cocktail reception in a beach bar on the hotel’s roof, which made for some very cool photos indeed!
We also headed outside to make the most of our London location – think classy side streets, hotel façades and red telephone boxes. The couple were happy to do some more light-hearted shots for me, including running down the street!
Later on, the hotel staff had turned the ceremony room into a stunning dinner venue. The place settings were simply beautiful so I made sure to capture every detail, along with the speeches and other intimate moments among the guests. Before we knew it, the rooms were being switched over once again to get the dancing into full swing!
Holly and James were both ambitious dancers and headed upstairs to get changed for their first dance, which was an energetic jive. They looked fabulous and really set the tone for the rest of the evening, which I did my best to capture in reportage mode.
Whilst the first time around may have been a more intimate affair, Holly and James’ wedding in Soho will surely be a celebration they’ll never forget. I know I certainly won’t!
