Being a wedding photographer in Surrey, I feel incredibly lucky to be so close to the capital, where I can experience a multitude of cultures in one setting. This was certainly the case for Hacer and Richard’s beautiful winter wedding – while Richard is the quintessential English gentleman, Hacer is a Turkish native, so I enjoyed the opportunity to experience a variety of traditions in one day.

Winter wedding at The Olde Bell, Hurley
Located in Berkshire, Hacer and Richard chose The Olde Bell in Hurley for their celebrations, which provided a wonderfully warm hotel and barn atmosphere. Prior to the big day, the bride had told me she wanted the majority of photos to be black and white – something which I was happy to oblige as I love the timeless effect of a black and white photograph.
Hacer and Richard had booked an all-day wedding photography package with me, so I started my day with the bride, her family and her friends from Turkey as they got ready in their hotel room. Hacer’s cousin took the role of makeup artist, and the ladies enjoyed a pre-wedding tipple to calm their nerves whilst the groom-to-be and his best man were chatting with the registrar downstairs.
Wedding photography in low light conditions
I love a challenge, and so for me, the barn venue for the ceremony would prove to be particularly interesting. Though it was decorated beautifully, there was very little light in the barn, even from the sun (you can imagine the weather at a winter wedding!) and flash photography was not allowed, so I had to use specially designed light sensitive equipment. Of course, this all comes as part of my studio, so I stepped up to the challenge and tried to remain as unobtrusive as possible.
Following the ceremony, the guests made their way into the bar as the barn was being set up for the evening’s festivities. I took the opportunity here to get a few snaps in reportage style, before taking the newlyweds away for a 20-minute photo shoot in the hotel. We found a lovely room with a fireplace and I invited the couple to make themselves at comfortable as possible – I think Hacer was glad of the chance to sit down after wearing heels all day!
Wedding speech photography
With this being an international winter wedding, all of the speeches had to be translated. This was great for me as the slower pace gave me the chance to really capture the reactions of the audience. The really fun part started after the speeches though – it seems the Turkish could teach the English a thing or two about dancing!
The cake cutting took place a little later than usual, and so I rounded off my day with a lovely shot of the couple making that all-important first slice as man and wife. With so many photos in my collection, I was excited to get home and edit them, and I managed to turn them around in just three days. This paid off as the couple left me a lovely five star review. They were great to work with and I wish them the very best!
